How did that happen? In March 2005, after submitting a travel article about Pine Bluffs, the editor asked if I'd do this series. It seems the person who'd signed on to write it had moved to Utah without much notice, and she panicked. She needed someone quickly. I'd never written about birds before, but decided to give it a shot. The gig lasted for the rest of that year.
